mia-kirshner.com what's new

a change in direction...

As i'm sure people have noticed, i haven't had much to say.

I'm planning on leading this site in a new direction. I haven't figured out exactly what it will take, but i want to make this site more about Mia's fans rather than about Mia's fan. Does that make sense?

There hasn't been a lot of news out there about Mia. I suppose i could say that both Now and Forever and season two of "The L Word" are due in stores in November... but you probably already knew about that, right? Correction: "The L Word" released in the states yesterday (October 25). Now & Forever will be released November 22.

Ok, maybe not. Now you do.

Anyway, i think that a lot of fans have had a lot of good things to say. I'll admit, a lot of fans also have some pretty bad/silly/inappropriate things to say, but the internet has evolved to where several surfers have assumed responsibility for the things they say, and raise red flags when others attempt to deface these websites.

What i'm trying to say is that this site needs user-contribution. Ms. Kirshner has fans all over the world, some fans just discovered her... some just discovered her project is in their backyard. These are the fans with the good stories. I can only tell my dream of running into her at the airport so many times! =^)

Besides, with airfares what they are, i won't be going anywhere for a while.

Aside from that it takes the pressure off of me. I can continue to work full-time, work my way back up to being a full-time student, and maybe even pursue a relationship with someone i fancy quite a bit!

The first step in this direction is getting the forums up and running... and they are. Have fun, but be respectful... my moderators are watching you! =^)

And now let me leave you swinging...

so close...

For those who were unaware, Now and Forever is due in theaters on August 19. Some of us have been waiting a while, some of us are just now finding out about it.

Kent Wingerak from Peace Arch Entertainment was kind enough to send along a review of the film by Norman Mark, so without further ado, here it is.

The sleeper of the year, perhaps the decade, "Now and Forever," which won the audience award at the Festival of Festivals in Cathedral City, CA., is a movie waiting to be discovered. A story of cross-cultural love, prejudice and eternal commitment, the film was expertly directed by Bob Clark ("A Christmas Story"). He kept things simple, involving and on track every minute. Casting: perfect. Location: marvelous. Emotional pull of the story: overwhelming, flawlessly combining elements of "Romeo and Juliet," "The Sixth Sense" and "Ghost" to keep the audience constantly involved in the drama. And the ending is a total surprise. When I saw it, people of all ages loved this film and demanded to know when they could see it again. And that is another story: Bob Clark is literally betting the ranch, putting up his own money to distribute the film himself to prove to major studios that a film which has his total support is also a viable commercial product. A film that demands to be seen. Four stars.
Norman Mark was formerly a guest co-host on Ebert & Roeper and the Movies as well as an Entertainment Critic with NBC in Chicago

Last week, The Broadway Theatre in Saskatoon, Sasketchewan (where the film was shot) held a cast screening. However, the film's stars Adam Beach and Mia Kirshner were unable to attend. Both were filming their current projects. I suppose you may have heard of "The L Word"?

So, it won't be much longer now...

I did want to mention something about the guestbook. It is perfectly reasonable to accept that someone may visit this site who does not share such admiration of Ms. Kirshner... and it is even acceptable they may post their feelings about that. However, all i ask is for anyone who feels this way to exercise a little tact. I don't think that is too much to ask... after all, us fans should be entitled to a safe haven, right? =^)

not dead... not yet, anyway

Wow! Nothing like a li'l outage to shake out the cobwebs, eh? Of course, if this had only been a li'l outage.

Anyway, i'm not going to bore you with the details of where the site disappeared to last week. However, i did want to inform people that the guestbook and forums aren't working proper. I apologize, but it may take a while to get everything reconfigured and working again.

Maybe now is a good time to ask: is having both a forum and a guestbook overkill? Should i keep one and axe the other? Which one? I guess i have some decisions to make...

Moving on... i've recently finished reading Anna Karenina for the first time. It is a personal project i'd wanted to undertake for a while, but i'd become such a television junkie i hadn't taken the time to read much of anything. Much less Russian literature.

Anyway, last year, i was at a party at the University of Kansas and began discussing literature with a couple of students there. I don't remember the fellow's name, but he was telling me that Russian literature is some of the best writing in existence... and that piqued my curiosity.

It started then, i suppose you could say i'm an avid reader again. I've read several books since then, not all Russian Literature, but one of the books i read was Anna Karenina. I wanted to read it again before watching the movie again. I'd only seen it once, way back when it first came out on VHS.

After reading the novel, it completely transformed the way i watched the movie. This movie is possibly the shortest screen adaptation of the book in existence, but given that, it does include an impressive amount of the book. The cinematography is gorgeous, and the soundtrack is amazing (i've always enjoyed Tchaikovsky!). However, gorgeous the movie is, i believe that the viewer will get more out of it if they have read the book.

It is often said, "the book is better than the movie." While i cannot totally disagree with that statement here, i can say this film compliments the book very, very well. I am very glad i watched it shortly after finishing the book.

And of course, Ms. Kirshner is amazing!

Hopefully someday, i'll be able to add Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina to my DVD collection. =^)

Mornin' just another day...

Wow! "24" has a much, much larger audience than it did two years ago!

I'd like to extend a welcome to all the "24" fans who have discovered the sexy assassin Mandy, and followed her trail here. As you have probably gathered, there is a lot more to discover of Mia Kirshner, if you care to check out more of her work... i figure there is a good chance of that if you looked her up and found her here. =^)

I've not yet seen the finale. TiVo has definite advantages and disadvantages. It is great to watch shows when you want and not follow TV schedules, but sometimes it is difficult to find enough time to watch TV. Especially now, as i'm moving towards a place where TV is a very, very minor part of my life.

Anyway, i expect to watch it by next week.

The release date for Now and Forever has been pushed back to August. Is this a bad thing? Not really, 'cos now they will have more time to promote the film and gather the audience that it deserves. I myself have heard very good things about this film, and we have been waiting a long, long time to see it, so you can expect some plugs for the film to show up here through the summer. You can find out more information as it becomes available from the official website: nowandforeverthemovie.com.

For those of you in Europe, "The L Word" series one will be released on DVD in the latter half of June. There has been no word yet on season two's release here in the states, but i've heard rumours that it will happen just ahead of the third season premiere on Showtime... probably sometime this winter.

What do you think the chances are of ever seeing "Wolf Lake" on DVD, eh? ;^)
