La vie surréelle...
So, have I mentioned that I've actually met Mia Kirshner? Finally?
I can tell you that she is very shy, but also very friendly in person. She is also extremely passionate in her research that resulted in I Live Here. I was simply amazed listening to her speak about what these displaced people... people not unlike you and me... are going through, how they deal, and all of the good and bad that comes along with it.
The book signing was somewhat surreal, yet so vivid. When she asked me who to sign the book to, and I told her... she knew who I was. She was genuinely as thrilled to meet me as I was her. She gave me hug, thanked me many times for supporting her and her career for so many years, through the good and the not-so-good.
I really thought, I'd be starstruck... but I really kept it in check. I loved the feeling of affirmation that she's just a shy but friendly girl, but with the added attachment of celebrity. When we parted, I genuinely admired her, and I believe she thought I was cool too.
So, what's next for this little piece of the internet? That, my friends, is the next little something to look forward to. ;^)

i live here: october 14!

I'm excited to announce that I've received the following press release from Pantheon Books:
Pantheon Books is honored to publish Mia Kirshner's first book on October 14, 2008. A talented actor of the big and small screens, Mia makes her debut as an author with I LIVE HERE, a ‘paper documentary’ collaboration with graphic novelist Joe Sacco and graphic designers Paul Shoebridge and Michael Simons.
The result of seven years of travel, I LIVE HERE is a raw and intimate journey to crises in four corners of the world: war in Chechnya, ethnic cleansing in Burma, globalization in Mexico, and AIDS in Malawai. Threaded throughout these accounts is Mia's intimate travel narrative, brought vividly to life in collaboration with writer J.B. MacKinnon and designers Paul Shoebridge and Michael Simons.
Here is the attached description of I LIVE HERE that came with the release:
I LIVE HERE (Pantheon Books/October 14, 2008/$29.95) is a visually stunning paper documentary, in which the lives of refugees and displaced people become at once personal and universal. It is a raw and intimate journey to crises in four corners of the world: war in Chechnya, ethnic cleansing in Burma, globalization in Mexico, and AIDS in Malawi.
The voices we encounter are those of displaced women and children, told in their own words or by noted writers and artists, including Joe Sacco, Ann-Marie MacDonald, Phoebe Gloeckner, Chris Abani, and many others. Threaded throughout these accounts is Mia Kirshner’s intimate travel narrative, brought vividly to life in collaboration with writer J.B. MacKinnon and designers Paul Shoebridge and Michael Simons.
This groundbreaking book is but one element of a larger project known as the I Live Here Foundation, committed to establishing creative writing programs for marginalized people. Further information is available at i-live-here.com.
I'm honored to have this opportunity to feature this exciting new chapter in Mia's career! I know many fans have been waiting a long time since this project was announced, and I hope everyone will join me in supporting Mia's new venture! Congratulations, Mia!

black dahlia on dvd today
I suppose i have some explaining to do. Maybe i do, but for the most part my audience will be wholly uninterested in why i haven't posted anything here for so long.
So, i'll just say that i'm hoping to find the time to do some badly needed upgrades around here and see if i can find some new information. I'm in a totally different place than i was ten years ago when this site was started.
For those who are unaware, The Black Dahlia is available on Region 1 DVD today. I think "The L Word" has been out for some time too, but i've lost track of these things.
Does anyone have any new information on the book?
That's all i have for now.
